What is a conception calendar?

A conception calendar also know as conception calculator or ovulation calculator is a chart of sorts based on one’s natural menstrual cycles. It falls under the category of Fertility Awareness or Natural Family Planning. This category includes methods of birth control involving no artificial means. The conception calendar is one of them.

How is a conception calendar made?

The conception calendar is a means for predicting when your body is at its most fertile. To make this prediction, one must first become familiar with the menstrual cycle. This takes time and requires charting it. There are certain facts one needs to know in order to understand and accomplish this. Based on an average 28-day cycle, the first day is the beginning of the menstrual flow. By the 7th day the egg is preparing for fertilization. At some point between days 11-21, ovulation occurs, at which time fertilization takes place if sperm is introduced. If fertilization does not occur, hormone levels drop around the 28th day, causing the onset of menstruation again. Remember, every woman’s cycle differs in length. Part of the reason for tracking the length of the cycle is to determine what is average for you.

Conception calendars are not created overnight. This is a method that requires patience in order to produce reliable results. To compile the data you need, you will need to track your cycles for 8 to 12 months. Once you have done so, however, the hard part is over and the rest of the process is fairly straightforward.

Keep in mind that Day 1 of your cycle is always the first day of menstruation. Then, identify the longest and shortest of the cycles you’ve tracked. To determine the first day of your fertility window, take the number of days in your shortest cycle and subtract the number 18. For example, if your shortest cycle is 25 days, you would subtract 18 from 25, arriving at 7. This would mean that your fertile period begins on Day 7 of your cycle. For the last day of your fertility window, take the number of days in your longest cycle and subtract 11. For example, if your longest cycle was 31 days, subtract 11 from 31, arriving at 20. This would mean that Day 20 of your cycle is the last day of your fertile period.

Now that you have this information, you can use your conception calendar to predict the days on which you are most likely to get pregnant. In the example above, your fertility window, or most fertile time, is between days 7 and 20 of your cycle. Obviously, ovulation will not occur on all of these days. However, if you are trying to get pregnant, you will know when the optimal time for intercourse is. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, use an external birth control method during this time, such as condoms, or avoid intercourse altogether. Conception calculator can be also used as a baby geneder predictor or pregnancy calendar.

In today’s world, more and more people are "going green" conception calendars are a good way to go green in another aspect of life. If you are a fan of natural, tried-and-true things and are in a monogamous relationship, conception calendars provide a method of birth control free of hormones and chemicals. When created and used correctly, they are not a relic from our grandmothers’ times but a useful, natural option of our own.
