Signs of Ovulation

Signs of Ovulation Fertility can be a mystery. Obviously, the chances of conceiving are greatest if you have sex around the time of ovulation. Learning to pinpoint when ovulation occurs is the key to achieving this. Creating an ovulation calendar and using an ovulation predictor kits are two ways of predicting ovulation. To predict ovulation, you must first determine when your next period is due to start. Then, simply count back twelve to sixteen days. The time period you arrive at is when you can expect to be most fertile.

Learning as much as possible about your own body and cycle, and becoming as familiar with them as possible, is also recommended. Learning to recognize the signs of ovulation helps you pinpoint its occurrence and time intercourse for the best chances at conception. The book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is an excellent guide to learning about your body, particularly when and how it ovulates. It is a must-read for anyone attempting to achieve pregnancy.

The following are a few signs of ovulation:

  • Changes in the cervical mucus. The amount and texture will increase. This change indicates rising estrogen levels. A woman is generally considered to be at her most fertile when it resembles raw egg whites. This is because the mucus resembling raw egg whites coats the path the sperm takes on its way through the uterus, into the fallopian tubes and to the egg.
  • Elevated body temperature. After ovulation, body temperature can increase. This can be detected by a basal body temperature thermometer. A sharp rise in body temperature indicates the release of an egg. This stimulates the production of progesterone, which is responsible for the sharp elevation in temperature. A woman is most fertile during the two to three days before this rise in body temperature. It can take up to two days after ovulation for progesterone levels to rise enough to cause an increase in body temperature. For this reason, it is recommended that you chart your temperature every morning for a few months. This way, you will be able to detect a pattern, which in turn helps to better predict ovulation.
  • Lower abdominal pain. Some women can actually feel ovulation occurring. The sensations are reported to range from a mild ache to a severe pain in durations anywhere from a moment to a couple of hiurs.
